Slideout Rangehoods
The selection of Slide Out Rangehoods at Signature Appliances delivers the reliable, powerful ventilation you need to enjoy a healthy kitchen environment. Able to be conveniently slid away when not in use, they’re produced by leading manufacturers to ensure long-term functionality.
A slideout rangehood sits concealed beneath an overhead cabinet when not in use. When you're cooking, you pull the panel out - it extends forward over the cooktop, improving the capture area and increasing airflow. The retractable design takes up minimal visual space and doesn't require a permanent chimney body to be visible in the kitchen. It's a practical choice for kitchens where cabinetry runs directly above the cooktop but a fixed or visible rangehood would interrupt the design. Brands like Miele, Westinghouse and Bosch produce quality slideout models across a range of extraction capacities.
Key Features to Look For
Extraction capacity: Slideout models typically range from 400-800 m3/h. For everyday cooking on a ceramic or induction cooktop, 500-650 m3/h is generally adequate. Gas cooktops benefit from the higher end of the range.
Extension depth: How far the panel slides out matters. A panel extending 300-350mm positions extraction further over the cooktop for better capture of vapours from rear burners.
Baffle vs mesh filters: Baffle filters are easier to clean (usually dishwasher-safe) and more efficient. Mesh filters trap grease across multiple layers and need more frequent washing.
Controls: Controls are typically on the front of the sliding panel. Touch controls are easier to keep clean; mechanical buttons are more durable long-term.
LED lighting: Slim LED strips on the underside of the panel illuminate the cooktop clearly in most installations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What's the difference between a slideout and an undermount rangehood?
An undermount rangehood installs entirely inside the cabinet and is invisible - you see only the grille underneath. A slideout has a panel that extends outward when in use, covering more of the cooktop. Slideout models are often easier to retrofit into an existing kitchen since they don't need to fit inside the cabinet - they mount beneath it.
Q. Can I install a slideout rangehood without overhead cabinetry?
No - a slideout rangehood mounts to the underside of an overhead cabinet. Without a cabinet above, you need a canopy or island rangehood instead.
Q. What clearance do I need between the rangehood and the cooktop?
Follow the manufacturer's specification, but as a general guide: 65cm minimum above electric and induction cooktops, 70cm minimum above gas. Insufficient clearance above gas is a safety issue and may void the warranty of both appliances.
Q. Do slideout rangehoods need ducting?
No - most slideout rangehoods can operate in either ducted or recirculating mode, so external ducting isn't a strict requirement. Ducted installation vents air outside entirely and is the more effective option, particularly for gas cooktops or households that do a lot of high-heat cooking; recirculating passes air through an activated charcoal filter and returns it to the kitchen, which works adequately for lighter cooking but requires the carbon filter to be replaced every 3-6 months. If external ducting is possible in your kitchen, it's worth the installation effort - but recirculating is a practical alternative where running a duct through the wall or ceiling isn't feasible.
