An island rangehood ventilates a cooktop on a kitchen island bench and acts as a deliberate architectural feature in the room. Suspended from the ceiling above the island, it commands visual attention - so design matters as much as extraction performance. Our collection of premium island rangehoods features world-class brands known for their innovation and quality. We offer models from leading brands such as Smeg and Falmec in stainless steel, black and statement designs.

Sizing an Island Rangehood

Width is the most important dimension. The rangehood should be at least as wide as the cooktop below - and many designers recommend going 10-15cm wider to improve capture of vapours that drift sideways. A 90cm cooktop typically works best with a 90cm or 100cm rangehood above.

Ceiling height is the other key factor. Most island rangehoods require at least 2.4m of ceiling height. The unit typically hangs 65-80cm above the cooktop surface (manufacturer specifications vary). The distance from the top of the unit to the ceiling determines how much chimney body you need - measure carefully before purchasing.

Ducted Installation

Island rangehoods need to be ducted externally - recirculating is technically possible but significantly less effective at this scale. The duct runs upward through the chimney body and into the ceiling, then out through the roof space to the outside. This ducting path needs to be planned at the kitchen design stage, not retrofitted after the ceiling is finished.

Professional installation is essential. The rangehood needs structural ceiling support (not just a plasterboard fixing), correct duct connection and sealing, and an electrical connection. Confirm installation feasibility with your kitchen designer or builder before specifying the model.

Key Features to Look For

  • Extraction capacity: For open-plan kitchens, aim for 900-1200 m3/h. Open kitchens have no walls to contain cooking vapours, so higher extraction capacity is more important here than in an enclosed kitchen.

  • Noise at operating speeds: An island rangehood is often in the direct sightline of dining and living areas. Check the noise rating (dB) at medium speed, not just maximum.

  • Lighting coverage: The rangehood should illuminate the full cooktop surface clearly. Look for perimeter or wide-array LED lighting rather than a single central lamp.

  • Speed settings: At least 3 speeds, ideally 4-5 plus a boost mode for high-heat cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can any rangehood be used as an island rangehood?

No. Island rangehoods are specifically engineered to be suspended from the ceiling and to extract from all sides, since the cooktop is open on four sides rather than against a wall. A wall-mounted canopy rangehood is designed for one-directional extraction and can't substitute.

Q. What ceiling height do I need?

Most models specify a minimum of 2.4m. Higher ceilings (2.7m+) are common in kitchens where island rangehoods are installed and don't create any performance problems - you'll need a longer chimney section, usually available as an accessory or custom order.

Q. Does an island rangehood need special electrical work?

A standard 10A circuit is sufficient for most island rangehood motors. However, the location (ceiling-mounted, typically in the centre of the room) usually means new electrical work is required. Factor this into your installation budget.

Q. How do I clean an island rangehood?

The grease filters are the main item - usually aluminium baffle filters that are dishwasher-safe, cleaned every 4-6 weeks. The exterior surfaces wipe down with a microfibre cloth and a mild degreaser. The chimney body benefits from a wipe-down every few months.
