What is a Fixed Rangehood?
A fixed rangehood is the simplest, most reliable format available - a permanent extraction unit that mounts under an overhead cabinet with no moving parts and no chimney section required. What you see is the unit itself: grille, controls, lighting, in a compact profile that sits flush against the underside of the cabinet. Well suited to kitchens that want effective ventilation without a visible statement, or where simplicity and ease of maintenance take priority. Many fixed models from brands like Westinghouse, Miele and Smeg are available in premium finishes that look sharp in the kitchen without dominating it. At Signature Appliances, we present a curated selection of premium fixed rangehoods, each designed to deliver powerful and unwavering reliability, ensuring your cooking space remains consistently fresh and clean.
Key Features to Look For
Extraction capacity: Most fixed rangehoods offer 400-700 m3/h, which suits most Australian home kitchens. For high-output cooking or larger kitchens, check the upper end of the available range.
Fan speed settings: At minimum, look for three speed settings. More steps give better control at different cooking intensities.
Filter type and accessibility: The filter is the main maintenance item. Look for aluminium baffle filters that are dishwasher-safe and easy to remove without tools.
Ducted or recirculating: Most fixed models support both. Ducted is preferable if external ventilation is available; recirculating works where it isn't.
Lighting: LED lighting is the current standard. Clear illumination of the cooking surface is more useful than it sounds, particularly in kitchens with limited overhead lighting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What's the difference between a fixed and a slideout rangehood?
A fixed rangehood stays permanently in place - there's no retractable panel. A slideout rangehood has a panel that extends over the cooktop when in use. Fixed models have no mechanical components to wear out. Slideout models cover more cooktop surface when extended.
Q. Can a fixed rangehood go in a kitchen without overhead cabinetry?
No. A fixed rangehood mounts to the underside of an overhead cabinet. Without one, you need a canopy rangehood, island rangehood or downdraft rangehood instead.
Q. How often does the filter need cleaning?
For regular home cooking, every 4-6 weeks is appropriate. For heavier use - daily cooking, lots of frying or gas cooking - every 2-4 weeks. A clean filter maintains extraction efficiency and reduces the risk of grease accumulation in the ductwork.
