An undermount rangehood (also called an integrated or concealed rangehood) installs inside an overhead cabinet directly above your cooktop. From the kitchen, all that's visible is the extraction grille on the underside of the cabinet - no chimney, no visible body, no design intrusion. The cabinetry, splashback and cooktop take the visual lead. For a refined, design-led kitchen, undermount rangehoods offer the perfect blend of discretion and performance. At Signature Appliances, we curate a selection of high end undermount rangehoods that combine quiet operation, advanced filtration and contemporary finishes, ensuring your kitchen performs beautifully while looking effortlessly elevated.

How Do Undermount Rangehoods Work?

The extraction unit for an undermount rangehood sits inside the cabinet above. Air is pulled through the grille on the underside, passes through a grease filter and then either exits via a duct to the outside (ducted) or passes through an activated charcoal filter and returns to the kitchen (recirculating). Most quality undermount models support both configurations.

Because the motor and extraction unit live inside a cabinet, undermount rangehoods are generally quieter than visible canopy models - the cabinet walls absorb some of the operating noise.

Key Features to Look For

  • Extraction capacity: Available from around 400 m3/h up to 1000+ m3/h for high-performance units from brands like Falmec and Bosch Series 8. Match the capacity to your cooking habits and cooktop type.

  • Perimeter extraction: Some premium undermount models draw air from around the entire perimeter of the grille rather than just the centre, capturing vapours more effectively across the full cooktop width.

  • Auto shut-off: A timer function that automatically switches the rangehood off after a set period.

  • Filter clean indicator: Alerts you when the grease filter needs cleaning. The filter is the most important maintenance item for undermount models.

  • Hob2Hood or remote control: Some models can be connected wirelessly to a compatible induction cooktop to adjust speed automatically.

Installation Requirements

The cabinet above the cooktop needs enough internal depth to accommodate the rangehood unit, plus adequate headroom for the duct connection if ducting externally. Standard 300-350mm deep cabinets accommodate most undermount models. Check the product's required cabinet dimensions before ordering - and before cabinetry is built.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is an undermount rangehood as powerful as a canopy rangehood?

At equivalent extraction ratings, yes. The extraction capacity is the relevant figure regardless of where the unit is installed. The practical constraint is that very high extraction rates (1200+ m3/h) are less common in this format, so for very large kitchens or high-output cooking, a canopy rangehood may offer more headroom at the top end.

Q. What size cabinet do I need above the cooktop?

Most undermount rangehoods require a cabinet depth of at least 300mm (front to back) and an internal height of around 170-250mm depending on the unit. The width should match your cooktop width. Always check the manufacturer's minimum cabinet dimensions in the installation guide before cabinetry is built.

Q. Can I retrofit an undermount rangehood into an existing kitchen?

Yes, if you have an overhead cabinet in the right position. The main challenge is running the duct to the outside - if the cabinet is against an exterior wall, this is relatively straightforward. If not, ceiling ducting is more involved but usually achievable.
