Rangehood Filter Types

  • Aluminium grease filters: The main filter in most rangehoods. Traps grease particles before they enter the duct or fan housing. Most are dishwasher-safe and should be cleaned every 4-6 weeks with regular use. Replace if bent, clogged beyond cleaning or corroded.

  • Carbon/charcoal filters: Used in recirculating rangehoods to absorb cooking odours before returning air to the kitchen. Cannot be washed - need replacement every 3-6 months depending on use. Always use brand-compatible carbon filters for your specific model.

  • Foam or synthetic filters: Found on older or budget models. Less effective than aluminium or baffle filters and generally not dishwasher-safe.

Recirculation Kits

If you have a ducted rangehood but external ducting is no longer possible, a recirculation kit converts the unit to internal filtration. The kit includes a carbon filter housing and a blanking plate for the duct outlet. Note that recirculation is less effective than external ducting - it removes odours but returns moisture and some fine particles to the kitchen.

Ducting Components

For rangehoods being newly installed or re-ducted, the correct duct diameter matters. Using undersized ducting restricts airflow and reduces extraction efficiency - and increases noise as the fan works harder. Most quality rangehoods specify 150mm or 200mm round ducting. Straight rigid ducting is more efficient than flexible ducting and should be used where possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I know what filter to buy for my rangehood?

The rangehood model number is the key reference. Check the label inside the filter housing or the product documentation for the filter part number. Using a non-matching filter can reduce extraction efficiency and, for carbon filters, odour removal performance.

Q. How often should carbon filters be replaced?

Every 3-6 months for households cooking regularly (4-5 times per week). Light-use households can extend this to 6-12 months. A noticeable increase in cooking odours remaining in the kitchen after cooking is the practical sign that the carbon filter needs replacing.

Q. Can I use a generic filter instead of a brand-specific one?

For aluminium grease filters, universal-fit options often work adequately if they match the dimensions and fit securely. For carbon filters, brand-specific replacements are recommended - generic alternatives can vary significantly in activated charcoal density and odour absorption performance.

Q. What duct size do I need?

Check the rangehood's installation guide, which will specify the duct diameter. Common sizes are 120mm, 150mm and 200mm. Using the specified size is important - smaller ducting creates backpressure that forces the fan to work harder, increases noise and reduces extraction effectiveness.
